Soil Fauna Can Support Both Litter Decomposition And Soil Organic Matter Accumulation

Soil is an amazing organ of the planet, all living creatures die one day and they become completely recycled for future uses. Only thanks to this constant recycling can our body can consist of the same atoms as the bodies of dinosaurs and other ancient creatures. Soils, or specifically soil organisms, represent the most important recycling station in the earth.

The popular Science trends website brings a summary of Jan Frouz's article on the role of soil fauna in ecosystems behavior, which was published in the prestigious Geoderma magazine. The article describes the mechanisms, by which soil fauna influence the behavior of other components of ecosystems and thus significantly determine a number of key ecosystem processes including the tranformation of organic matter and the cycle of major biogenic elements.
